The Habit Loop Decoded: Cue, Routine, Reward — And the Critical Piece Everyone Misses
In 2012, Charles Duhigg published The Power of Habit and introduced millions of people to the habit loop: cue → routine → reward. The model was revolutionary — it gave people a framework for understanding why habits form and how to change them. But there's a critical piece the framework misses: what happens when the reward isn't enough to sustain the routine through the formation period?
The Three Components
Cue: The trigger that initiates the behavior. It can be a time (6 AM alarm), a location (arriving at the gym), an emotional state (feeling stressed), a preceding action (finishing lunch), or another person (your workout partner arriving). The cue must be consistent and specific — “when I feel like it” is not a cue.
Routine: The behavior itself. Going to the gym, reading 20 pages, meditating for 10 minutes. This is the part most people focus on — and the part that matters least. The routine is just the middle of the sandwich.
Reward: The payoff that tells the brain “this loop is worth repeating.” The reward can be intrinsic (endorphins after exercise), extrinsic (checking off a box), or social (accountability partner's approval). Without a compelling reward, the loop collapses.
The Loop Gap
Duhigg's model describes how habits work after they're formed. It does not solve every formation problem — the period where the routine still requires conscious effort and rewards feel distant. Pledged addresses that design question with optional consequence-based enforcement and a review path.

The standard advice is to add a reward after the routine: treat yourself to a smoothie after the gym, watch a show after studying, eat chocolate after meditating. The problem? These rewards are temporally disconnected from the routine and often counterproductive.
Schultz et al.'s research on dopamine prediction errors shows that rewards must be immediate, predictable, and proportional to sustain behavior. A smoothie 45 minutes after a gym session is too delayed. A Netflix show after studying is a different dopamine circuit. Chocolate after meditation contradicts the health goal.

Duhigg later added a fourth component: craving. The craving is the anticipatory desire that drives the loop. You don't just respond to the cue — you crave the reward before you even start the routine. Wolfram Schultz's Nobel Prize-winning work showed that dopamine fires not when you receive a reward, but when you anticipate one.
