Habit Stacking: The Neuroscience of Anchoring New Behaviors to Existing Routines

The Weakness: Stacking Without Stakes

BJ Fogg acknowledges this limitation in Tiny Habits: the method works best for small, low-friction behaviors (flossing one tooth, doing two pushups). Lally et al. (2010) found that it takes an average of 66 days for a behavior to become automatic — with a range of 18 to 254 days depending on complexity. During this critical window, the behavior is not yet habitual — meaning it still requires conscious effort and is vulnerable to disruption.
